Pre-Surgical Physiotherapy

Prepare your body before surgery — known as prehabilitation — for a smoother, faster and stronger recovery.

Understanding pre-surgical physiotherapy

How you go into surgery has a major influence on how you come out of it. 'Prehabilitation' — preparing your body in the weeks before a planned operation — is one of the most effective and underused ways to improve your recovery and outcomes.

Entering surgery as strong and mobile as possible means the muscles around the joint are better prepared, you understand and can practise your post-operative exercises in advance, and you tend to regain function faster afterwards. Research consistently shows prehab can shorten recovery and improve results.

We build a focused pre-surgical program to maximise your strength, mobility and confidence, and to teach you exactly what to expect and do after the operation — so you walk into your procedure genuinely well prepared.

Common causes

  • Upcoming joint replacement (hip or knee)
  • Planned ligament reconstruction (such as ACL)
  • Scheduled spinal or other orthopaedic surgery
  • Weakness or stiffness ahead of an operation
  • A wish to optimise recovery and outcomes

Signs & symptoms

  • Reduced strength before a planned surgery
  • Limited mobility or movement in the area
  • Pain making preparation difficult
  • Uncertainty about the recovery process
  • Deconditioning while waiting for surgery

We teach your post-operative exercises and what to expect, so you start your recovery confident and ahead of the curve.

What to expect

Even a few weeks of focused prehabilitation can make a real difference to post-operative strength and recovery speed. The fitter and better-prepared you are going in, the smoother the journey out tends to be.

We coordinate with your surgical timeline and goals, and seamlessly continue your care into post-surgical rehabilitation once you're ready.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about pre-surgical physiotherapy and how we treat it.

Does prehab really make a difference?

Yes. Evidence shows that being stronger and better prepared before surgery improves recovery speed and outcomes, and reduces complications for many procedures.

How long before surgery should I start?

Even a few weeks helps, though more time is better. We'll make the most of whatever window you have before your operation.

Will you continue my care after surgery?

Yes. We bridge seamlessly into your post-surgical rehabilitation, following your surgeon's protocol, for a continuous recovery journey.
