Neck Pain
Relief for stiff, painful necks — from desk strain and tension to whiplash and old injuries — and the headaches that come with them.
Neck pain is increasingly common in a world of screens, phones and desk work. The neck is built for mobility, which also makes it sensitive — sustained postures, stress and muscle tension can quietly build up until even small movements feel stiff and sore.
It can also follow a specific injury such as whiplash, sleeping awkwardly, or develop alongside arthritis of the neck joints. Because the nerves and muscles of the neck connect closely to the head and shoulders, neck problems frequently bring tension headaches, shoulder tightness and a feeling of being 'wound up' across the upper back.
Physiotherapy is highly effective for mechanical neck pain. We release the stiff joints and tight muscles driving your symptoms, then build the deep stabilising strength and postural habits that keep the neck comfortable through long days.
Common causes
- Sustained desk, screen and phone postures ('tech neck')
- Muscle tension linked to stress and poor sleep
- Whiplash and other neck injuries
- Stiff or arthritic neck joints
- Weak deep neck and upper-back stabilising muscles
Signs & symptoms
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion turning the head
- Aching across the neck, shoulders and upper back
- Tension headaches arising from the base of the skull
- Pain that worsens after prolonged screen use
- Occasional pins and needles into the arm or hand
How we treat neck pain
A clear, step-by-step path from settling your symptoms to lasting recovery — tailored to you at every stage.
Assess neck & posture
We examine how your neck moves, where it's stiff or guarded, and how your posture and daily habits contribute, while screening the nerves and shoulders.
Release & mobilise
Gentle manual therapy and soft-tissue work free up stiff joints and tight muscles, easing pain and restoring comfortable movement.
Strengthen & retrain
Targeted deep-neck and upper-back exercises rebuild support and endurance so your neck copes with long days without flaring.
Ergonomic coaching
We optimise your workstation, screen height and movement breaks, and give you simple resets to use through the day.
What to expect
Mechanical neck pain typically responds quickly, with noticeable easing of stiffness and headaches over the first few sessions. Whiplash and longer-standing problems take a little more time and a graded approach.
The biggest long-term wins come from changing the daily loads on your neck — so we invest time in posture, ergonomics and habit change alongside hands-on treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions about neck pain and how we treat it.
Why do I get headaches with my neck pain?
The upper neck joints and muscles refer pain into the head, producing what's known as a cervicogenic headache. Treating the neck often resolves these headaches.
Is it bad to hear clicking in my neck?
Painless clicking or grinding is usually harmless and very common. It only matters if it's consistently linked with pain, which we'll assess.
Can my pillow or desk be the problem?
Often, yes. Sleep position and workstation setup are common contributors, and small adjustments can make a big difference — we'll guide you through them.
